How can we support reading and writing at home?

Value spoken language.

Engaging your child in rich conversations will help develop their confidence, ideas, vocabulary, and grasp of language structure.

Model writing by hand.

Let your child see you writing letters, writing grocery lists, writing in a journal. Take dictation for your child. Let them observe how you form letters and words.

Model reading for fun.

Let your child observe you reading books for enjoyment.

Read side-by-side; even if your child is not reading the words, they can practice handling books gently and look at illustrations, while you read your own book.

Engage in dialogic reading.

When reading books aloud, ask your child questions:

What’s this a picture of?

What do you think will happen next?

Why do you think she did that?

How do you think he is feeling?

Limit screen time.

Children need interactive language experiences in order to develop oral language, as well as reading and writing skills. Screens can’t replicate human interaction and conversation.
